How to get a job as a web developer: This is the answer to the ‘How to get your first job in tech’ question
Developer jobs are often one of the most sought-after positions in the tech industry.
But the job market for web developers is a notoriously difficult one.
“It’s an incredibly competitive market,” says Joe Cunha, a Web Developer Career Guide author who recently published the book How to Get Your First Job in Tech.
“There are so many great people that want to be there and there’s so many different types of candidates out there, from the technical to the creative.”
What makes web developers a difficult industry to get into is the sheer volume of jobs.
There are currently more than 8 million web developers across the United States, and in 2017, the U.S. workforce is projected to grow by 2.8 million jobs, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
That’s more than twice as many people as were employed in the U!
The number of jobs in web development has tripled in the past 10 years, from 890,000 to 1.5 million in 2015.
“A lot of people think the web is dying, and I think it’s actually in a good position,” says Scott R. Taylor, chief executive officer of Rethink Web, an online job-search tool for developers.
“I think the industry is in great shape right now.”
It’s also not hard to see why.
With more than $8 billion in annual revenue, web developers are one of tech’s most profitable industries.
In 2017, companies spent an average of $3.9 million a day on salaries and benefits for their developers, according in a recent report by McKinsey & Co. The median pay for a web designer at an American web developer site was $70,000, and $1,000 more for a developer at a software development firm.
The top salaries for web designers and developers were $160,000 and $200,000 respectively in 2017.
But this growth has come at the expense of the workforce.
According to a recent study by the New York Times, fewer than one-third of the jobs created in 2016 were web developers, and that number is expected to grow to as low as 10 percent by 2021.
“What you need to understand is that web development is not an overnight gig,” says Brian Schmidle, a former Google and Facebook engineer who’s now the executive director of the National Association of Software and Information Technology Professionals (NASHIP).
“It takes a long time to learn the trade, and there are many different things that people need to learn in order to become a web developers.”
It doesn’t help that web developers aren’t the most skilled of the job categories, according the McKinsey report.
A 2015 study from the Association for Computing Machinery found that only 23 percent of web developers had computer science degrees.
“The people that are successful today aren’t web developers,” says Taylor.
“They’re people who have had other careers and careers in other fields that require them to be able to program.”
“It is a very competitive industry” While some employers are already taking notice, many of these positions are not offered directly to web developers.
Instead, they are outsourced to the largest software development firms, such as Salesforce, Google, and Adobe, according TOEFL and the National Council of State Boards of Education.
And while companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple offer web development internships and mentorship programs for students, they aren’t as popular as their larger peers, which is why web developers may not be a good fit for these companies.
“Companies that want you to work in this industry aren’t interested in you,” says Schmidler.
“If they want you, they’re going to have a hiring manager, but if you don’t fit the profile they’re not going to hire you.”
The same is true for those who do get hired by these companies, which can have a huge impact on their future employment prospects.
“You can’t get into a lot of the positions that you’re interested in if you’re a web development person,” says Cunhha.
“And the ones that you can, you’re in a very limited market.
There’s not a ton of opportunities in the technology world right now for people who are web developers because the demand is so low.”
What can web developers do to make themselves a better candidate?
To be a better web developer, you need a variety of skills.
Here are some things you can learn to become successful: • Understand how your job description works.
Many web developers have struggled to understand how the different types and levels of web development work.
“In a lot in the programming world, you have people who know how to code.
They have good hands-on experience,” says Mark M. Johnson, a web programming veteran and founder of Web Skills Academy, a program for web developer training.
“But if you just know how HTML and CSS are built, you don and that’s
